Make Back-to-School Season a Little Greener

These eight simple swaps can help families reduce waste, save money, and make more sustainable choices this school year.

Back-to-school season often means shopping for books, clothes, supplies, lunches, and technology. But before filling up the shopping cart, take a look at what you already have.

A few simple choices can help reduce waste, save money, and make the start of the school year a little more sustainable.

Here are eight easy ideas to try:

  1. Borrow or buy used books. Check libraries, used bookstores, school exchanges, or other families before purchasing new books.
  2. Repair backpacks and other gear before replacing them. A broken zipper, loose strap, or small tear may be an easy fix that can extend the life of an item for another school year.
  3. Finish the supplies you already own. Pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, and art supplies left over from last year may still have plenty of life in them.
  4. Bring a reusable water bottle. Refillable bottles are an easy way to reduce the need for single-use plastic bottles.
  5. Pack reusable lunch utensils. Reusable containers, utensils, and napkins can help cut down on disposable items in school lunches.
  6. Choose secondhand clothing. Thrift stores, clothing swaps, and hand-me-downs can give clothes a second life while reducing waste.
  7. Consider refurbished electronics. If a new device is needed, a professionally refurbished computer or tablet may be a more affordable and sustainable option.
  8. Swap plastic wrap for reusable wraps or containers. Reusable sandwich bags, food wraps, and containers can replace many single-use lunch items.

Sustainability does not have to mean making major changes all at once. Reusing what you have, choosing durable items, and replacing disposable products with reusable alternatives can add up over the course of the school year.

Which sustainable swap will your family try this year?
