A Cut Above: Saratoga's Michael Anthony Salon
Mother/son duo create positive atmosphere at upscale Saratoga Village location.
Stepping into the spotless Michael Anthony Salon, 14487 Big Basin Way, you’d never guess it was originally a mid-century, two-story residence that had previously housed an office.
Owner Michael Anthony Tsakiris completely transformed the location in 2010 into an upscale beauty salon featuring lots of windows, dark hard-wood floors, burnt orange walls and large mirrors everywhere.
“I wanted a clean, contemporary yet comfortable environment,” said Tsakiris, an outgoing man with movie star looks, an engaging personality and a large clientele of longtime fans.

“I’ve been coming to Michael for 12 years and I love him,” said Susan Wilson. “He’s so social and friendly. If he gets bored with my hairstyle he’s never afraid to change it. And, the salon itself is just beautiful.”
The salon is co-owned by Tsakiris and his mother Connie Mintegui, who have been working side by side for 15 years, since Tsakiris’ graduation from the San Jose City Cosmetology program.

Mintegui owned Demetri’s Salon on DeAnza Boulevard for 35 years. The mother/son duo decided to relocate to Saratoga because they are both longtime Saratoga residents and “have always been attracted to its unique charm. Not to mention it’s in one of the most desirable locations in the Silicon Valley,” said Tsakiris.
They love working together. “It’s great ... My mom has a great attitude and is a very talented hairdresser. I've learned a lot from her.”
His mom returns the favor saying, “Michael makes coming to work fun ... He’s in charge of the salon. If there is a problem he addresses it immediately. He doesn’t let problems fester; he gets it out in the open and deals with it. Everyone enjoys working in that kind of atmosphere. And, the clients benefit when the stylists are happy to be here.”
The large staff is committed to working together as a team and are constantly learning new techniques to keep up with ever-changing style trends.
“When we first opened the salon, I had a vision of having a real team-based salon and I think we've accomplished that,” said Tsakiris. “Our more experienced stylists are always willing to help our younger staff. Our energy in the salon is definitely high energy and positive. At Michael Anthony Salon positive attitude is everything.”
Tsakiris’ best tip for healthy looking hair? “Stick to a deep conditioning routine once a week to maintain the health of your hair,” he says, “and always use a thermal protector before you blow dry your hair.”
Looking ahead to the most popular styles of 2013 Tsakiris says to look for long, straight hair with a middle part, short edgy haircuts, bangs, redheads, pastel colors and incorporating braids into your daily, long hairdos.
