Renovations Under Way at Saratoga's Grover House

A quick peek inside showed dry-walling and other improvements are taking place at historic cottage at 14521 Big Basin Way.

A quick peek through its windows this past week showed upgrades are under way inside the charming historic Grover House, 14521 Big Basin Way.

The small building, constructed circa 1895, changed ownership last year, so it appears its new owner is renovating its interior.

According to several downtown merchants, several businesses have operated out of the small building throughout the years.

Saratoga Mayor Jill Hunter said the Grover House was purchased by La Fondue owner Mitch Cutler, a Saratoga resident.

Cutler also owns Blue Rock Shoot.

"Last I talked to Mitch he intended to keep the front facade and make it into a pizza parlor," Hunter said.

The city's heritage resource inventory says the cottage typifies the small one-story gabled residences of the late 19th century in rural Saratoga.

Its front door and window have been replaced, but there are no other apparent major alterations to the building, the description noted.

The cottage was owned by David and Nancy Grover and it's one of the smallest single-family cottages in Saratoga Village, the description continued.

David Grover worked as a farmer and the couple in Saratoga with their son, Harry, who was a laborer on a farm, according to historical records.

After David’s death in 1906 at age 90, Nancy continued to live in the cottage with her son. She was active in community and church activities in Saratoga, records state.
