Departing commissioners Mark Johnson and Helen Lemmon honored for their service.

Saratoga residents Terence Ward and Steven Schlosser have been appointed by the Saratoga City Council to serve on the Parks and Recreation Commission and Library Commission.

The appointments were made during the Council's Oct. 3 meeting, with the city clerk administering the Oath of Office.

On Sept. 19, the Council held interviews for three vacancies on the Parks and Recreation Commission from the expiring terms of Mark Johnson, Christine Zak, and Terence Ward and one vacancy on the Library Commission from the expired term of Helen Lemmon.

As the membership vice president for the Friends of the Saratoga Libraries, Lemmon routinely volunteers at the Book-Go-Round in the Village and she has also served as a member of the Citizens Oversight Committee during renovations of the Saratoga Library.

"Helen has spent much of her life advocating for public libraries and promoting library activity," Saratoga Mayor Chuck Page said in reading a proclamation honoring Lemmon's work. "Helen continues to devote precious time and resources to serving her community and it is apparent to all who have worked with her that she is a dedicated member of the community."

Johnson was appointed to the Saratoga Parks and Recreation Commission in April 2009 to fill the remainder of an unexpired term.

In a proclamation honoring his service to the city, Page said Johnson led efforts to install nesting boxes throughout Saratoga parks and support local cavity-nesting birds.

He was also recognized for helping to identify potential locations to platn trees in the city and supported the city's status as a Tree City USA with the city being closer to planing 2,015 trees by the year 2015, Page said.

Johnson also organzed three outdoor movie night events in Wildwood Park, participated in the city's annual Arbor Day event and helped residents get active in city parks and traisl through Move It Saratoga and Let's Move Saratoga.
