8 Evaluated For Illness After Plane From San Jose Makes Emergency Landing At LAX

Eight people were medically evaluated on a Phoenix-bound American Airlines flight that departed from San Jose this morning but had to make an emergency landing in Los Angeles because of a mechanical problem, airline and fire officials said.

American Airlines Flight 564 made a safe emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport at 11:06 a.m., LAX spokeswoman Katherine Alvarado said.

There were 125 passengers and five crew members on the Airbus A319 plane, American Airline officials said.

Seven passengers and one flight attendant who complained of respiratory issues were evaluated by fire crews and then released, Los Angeles fire spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

People on board the plane reported being exposed to an odor in the cabin, Humphrey said. Everyone on the plane was able to leave it on their own, according to Humphrey.

The plane departed from Mineta San Jose International Airport at 10:07 a.m. for Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Arizona.

All passengers were accommodated on other flights to continue their trip to Phoenix, airline officials said.

A maintenance team was checking on the plane as of shortly before noon, according to airline officials. No other details about the incident were immediately available.
