Bringing Art to the Community

Art program at the library features the works of local artists.

A brand new exhibit, featuring some of the area’s best artists, is now appearing in Scotts Valley, but it is not where you would imagine it to be. It is on display on the walls of the newly built .

Since , the library has been a hub of activity, from children’s story times to book readings and live streaming of global TEDx events. There is always something for everyone.

And in addition to the wonderful space and great number of books, the library is now also a place for art, with a number of pieces featured on the walls throughout the building all thanks to the hard work of the Friends of the Scotts Valley Library volunteers.

“Over the past three years, we have raised almost $240,000 through the generosity of the citizens of Scotts Valley, and the hard work of a very committed Friends group,” said Elizabeth Walch, president of the Friends of the Scotts Valley Library. “Our funds have gone toward things such as an enhanced children’s area with an early literacy computer program, a state-of-the-art teen area with a gaming wall, and the Community Fireside Room with a nine-screen media wall, fireplace and kitchen suitable for community events and receptions. We have also designated funds to provide ongoing art displays to showcase the talents of local artists.”

The “Art in the Library” program was developed by the Friends to give local artists a place to display their work and to bring the joy of art to area residents.

The Friends are hoping that their goal of showcasing different art in the library will help people in the community learn to appreciate art, and to get them inspired.

The Friends are also aiming to keep all of the talent local and choose six artists’ work to display at a time in various mediums, including paintings, ceramics and photography.

The Friends are always looking for new artists and anyone is invited to apply. Artists that are chosen will have their work displayed for three months, and then the display will rotate to other local artists.
