Dance Your Way to a Healthier Heart
Grab your special someone, and learn to dance at the Skylight Ballroom.
February is Heart Health Month, with the highlight being Valentineβs Day, a day that focuses on candy, flowers, cards, dinner and desserts. While all these are nice gestures, why not make this year special by doing something physically good for your heart and your special someone?
A health-inspired idea that you might consider is dancing. Dancing has become a well-known form of exercise, and studies have shown that dancing helps keep the heart in shape; it improves coordination, memory and balance. Dancing can be compared to low impact exercise such as cycling, walking or aerobics. Dancing will tone your body, increase stamina, improve posture and give you self-confidence.
The best part of ballroom dancing is the βfun factor,β says Magdalena Mendez, a professional dancer and owner of Skylight Ballroom, 4652 Scotts Valley Dr.

βI enjoy bringing out the dancer in everyone,β she says.
The Skylight Ballroom opened two years ago, and from the get-go, the Scotts Valley community has been supportive. Itβs not just a dance studio; itβs a community dance studio.Β
βI consider myself a family person and wanted to become a part of a unique community,β Mendez says.
The ballroom will celebrate its two-year anniversary on March 5 with professional performances by the talented instructors and unique showcases by the students. Click here to read more and see the upcoming schedule.
Eugene and Bev Martin have gone to the dance studio for more than a year. They say they have always enjoyed dancing, as it keeps their minds and bodies healthy. βMagdalena does a terrific job at whipping you into shape,β Eugene says.
Her students refer to her as βMs. Vivacious.β Her instructions are very clear and specific, while always remaining positive and inspiring.
βShe not only keeps an eye on our dancing, she roams the room to help everyone correct their form while making learning dance moves enjoyable,β Bev says.Β
The Martins have lived in Scotts Valley for 40 years and have been married for 57 years.
βEugene is the love of my life,β Bev says. βWe are really great pals.Β We talk every day, have heart-to-heart conversations and eat most meals together. We enjoy going out and used to dance regularly at the Palomar and disco clubs in Santa Cruz years ago.Β
"If we are not at the Skylight Ballroom, Eugene moves the car out of the garage so we can practice our dance steps with plenty of room to move. We have always been exceptional dance partners and share a good sense of rhythm. Most importantly, we like having fun together.β
The whole community can experience that fun on Saturday night. Skylight Ballroom will have a Valentineβs Dance Party from 7-10 p.m, and the entire community is invited. The price per person is $12.
You never know, dancing may be just the thing to put a smile on your face. Upon entering the ballroom, a red carpet will greet you with a welcoming style.Β Sparkling Sangria and chocolate treats will be served.Β A dance contest (Jack and Jill style) will be hosted and judged by Miquel De Sousa, an allstar/champion dancer. The winner will receive private lessons from Miguel De Sousa.
Go ahead, don't be shy. Try dancing as a new form of activity. It will give you a full out-of-mind and body workout. Β Β
