Falcons Soar to Lacrosse Win Over Santa Cruz High

Scotts Valley wins, 19-1, in league play Friday night.

By Gary Hickey

The Scotts Valley Falcons swooped down on Santa Cruz High School Friday night for a 19-1 lacrosse league win against the young Cardinals.

Scotts Valley had a hard time scoring in the beginning of the game, with a few missed shots and then several good saves by Santa Cruz. Then Cardinal midfielder Scout Schiebelfired scored, waking up the Falcons, and the attack started.

The Falcons buried their shots for a four-goal scoring spree to end the first quarter 4-1. The second quarter saw the Falcons open up the offense with several fast-break goals, because of solid midfield play. The attack contributed seven more goals, and the midfield chipped in two for a 13-1 halftime lead.

The play continued to be controlled by Scotts Valley adding four more goals in the third quarter and slowed down scoring to two in the fourth, making the final 19-1.

The offense was led by attackman Spencer Fogelquist with eight goals and four assists, while Wesley Koenig controlled the offensive end and added five goals and two assists.

Five more Falcons added to the scoring. Hard-working midfielder Jake Rehnberg tallied two goals and five assists, and Collin Corbella had one goal and two assists.

Griffin Curtiss, Alexis Pineda and defenseman Cole Deblock each added a goal.

The defense played well when called upon, causing turnovers and moving the ball up field to the offense. It was hard for the Cardinals to get their offense moving against a hard-working defense.

The 5-0 Falcons need to stay focused as the season progresses in order to play well against the more experienced teams on the schedule. Next week, they look forward to Pacific Collegiate and Soquel high schools.
