Man Arrested In Scotts Valley For Alleged Beating

SCOTTS VALLEY, CA -- Officers arrested a man suspected of beating his girlfriend and then shooting himself in Scotts Valley early this morning, police said. Ryan Schell, 29, of Santa Cruz, was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment and kidnapping, according to police.
Officers responded to the 100 block of Mount Hermon Road around 4 a.m. today regarding reports of a domestic disturbance with shots fired, police said.
As officers arrived, they heard several shots, police said. A person described as an involved party fled the house as they arrived, according to police.

The officers went into the house and found a man with a gunshot wound, police said. The man was airlifted to Scotts Valley Center, where he underwent surgery, according to police.
A woman was taken to Dominican Hospital for injuries not deemed to be life-threatening, police said.

An investigation revealed that the woman had been beaten and held against her will and the man's gunshot wound self-inflicted, police said.
