Man Killed In Head-On Crash With Big-Rig On Hwy 1

BREAKING: The 59-year-old motorist's minivan drifted directly into path of oncoming semi, CHP said.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA – A 59-year-old Santa Cruz man died when his minivan crashed head-on with a big-rig on state Highway 1 near Big Basin Redwoods State Park in Santa Cruz County on Wednesday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday on Highway 1 north of Swanton Road.

The driver of a 1999 Toyota Sienna minivan was traveling north at about 55 mph when for some reason he allowed the vehicle to drift to the left directly in front of a 2016 Peterbilt big-rig traveling south on the highway and hauling a trailer, CHP officials said.

The two vehicles collided head-on. The minivan driver, whose name was not immediately available, suffered fatal injuries in the collision, according to the CHP.

The big-rig driver, a 60-year-old man from Oxnard, suffered minor injuries and was not arrested following the crash.

CHP officials said impairment appears to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
