Scotts Valley High Senior Girls Win Powder Puff Football Game

Girls show sportsmanship and respect on and off the field.

A big crowd turned out Friday night at Siltanen Park to watch the senior girls play the juniors in a lively game of flag football – otherwise known as powder-puff football.

The teams were coached by members of the school’s football team and refereed by the football staff and physical education instructor Jared Norman.

Junior Michele Mayfield was excited to be able to play in this year’s game.

“I wanted to be part of the team this year because it is a great social event and a lot of fun,” Mayfield said. “We’ve been practicing for about a month now. We really want to beat the seniors.”

Tre Braquet was head coach for the seniors while football player Tyler Marshall acted as head coach for the junior team.

“Coaching the girls this year was a learning experience,” Marshall said. “It’s about understanding what the girls do best – pass, run or fake and getting them to make the plays to their best abilities.”

The roles were reversed in the evening’s events, with the boys acting as the cheerleaders for the game. Senior cheerleader Chris Youmans was full of enthusiasm, wearing a black top hat and black knee-highs with a pink and black senior spirit shirt. The squad entertained during halftime providing acrobats and laughter for all.

The senior team scored first with an interception returned for a touchdown by Capella Yee. After the seniors scored again in the third quarter, the juniors rebounded with an 80-yard completion pass to Haley Robinson for their first touchdown of the game.

In the third and fourth quarters each team fought hard for the win. Juniors Alona Morrison and Kelsey Van Valer provided exceptional defense to keep the seniors scoring low.

Seniors Aly Bothman and Kelsea Brough each carried the ball with determination throughout the game. Brooklynn Daniels played offensive line and got a lot of coaching advice from her dad Jim who coaches PAL football.

“I’m proud of my girl for getting out here and playing,” Jim said.

The final score was seniors 12/juniors 6.

Win or lose both teams showed school spirit and had fun.

"I’m proud of the girls and their positive attitudes,” said Dayna Fisher, activities director for Scotts Valley High School. "This game is all about having fun. I credit the kids for their sportsmanship and school spirit, everyone really had a great time.”

If you missed Friday’s game, mark your calendars for Thursday, May 19 at 4 p.m. for a powder puff football game you won’t want to miss when the Scotts Valley High School girls take on the San Lorenzo Valley High School girls at the SLV field in Felton.
