What to Expect From Tonight's School Board Meeting

The Board will discuss transitional kindergarten and the elimination of certain certificated positions.

The Scotts Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees will meet at 6 p.m. at the City Council Chambers, One Civic Center Dr. The board is expected to consider the following items:

  • The Board will discuss updating a policy that incorporates the revised age criterion and implementation timeline for admission to kindergarten or first grade based on California law SB 1381 that was passed in September 2010. The law also requires districts to establish a transitional kindergarten program to offer to children whose admission is delayed due to the new minimum age requirements.
  • The Board will hear an informational report regarding progress on identifying any structural barriers and development of a plan to enhance ADA compliance throughout the district.
  • Superintendent Penny Weaver will recommend four new courses of study for the Board to consider adding at the high school. The courses are Biomechanics, Aerobics, Dance & Fitness, Honors English 2 and Non-Traditional Sport and Games.
  • The Board will discuss approving a resolution that would reduce or eliminate certain certificated employees for the 2012-13 school year. In order to meet notification deadlines for certificated personnel, the Board must act to direct the Superintendent to determine which employees are to receive notice of layoff as a result of service reduction or elimination.

The district’s next board of trustees meeting will be at 6 p.m. March 13.
