Amateur Radio “Field Day” June 27-28 Demonstrates Science, Skill, and Service
Local Club Celebrating its 80th Anniversary Will Operate at Zelzah and Devonshire
Members of the San Fernando Valley Amateur Radio Club, which is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, will be participating in a national Field Day event on Saturday and Sunday, June 27 – 28, at The First Presbyterian Church of Granada Hills, 10400 Zelzah Ave., Northridge.
Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the practice of Amateur Radio. The event is organized by ARRL, The National Association for Amateur Radio®.
The San Fernando Valley club, also known by its call sign of W6SD, was founded in 1946, only 13 years after the first Field Day, by veterans recently returned from World War II. It is one of the oldest continually operating “ham radio” clubs in the nation. For club history, see www.w6sd.com/history/.
The Club will operate around the clock, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday and continuing until 11 a.m. on Sunday. Club members will set up at The First Presbyterian Church of Granada Hills starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, June 28.
Additionally, boys and girls with Scouting America will participate, to work toward earning merit badges in radio.
This event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.
For more than 100 years, Amateur Radio — “ham radio”— has allowed people from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques. Hams also provide free public communication services to their communities and first responders, during a disaster or emergency, completely independent of cell phone or Internet networks.
Field Day demonstrates ham radio’s ability to work reliably under any conditions from almost any location. More than 30,000 people from thousands of locations across the nation are expected to participate in ARRL Field Day 2026 activities. The event, the most popular in ham radio, is held annually on the fourth full weekend in June.
Anyone may become a licensed Amateur Radio operator. There are more than 725,000 licensed hams in the United States, as young as 9 and as old as 100. With clubs like the San Fernando Valley Amateur Radio Club, it’s easy for anybody in the Valley to get involved.
