#GiveBackNews in LA: Homelessness in the Valley, Day of Unity, Parenting with Spirituality, Pediatric Cancer, and Women's Health

This week in #GiveBackNews, we have a positive step forward from the city after leaders declared a state of emergency for homelessness, news about domestic violence awareness month in Los Angeles, and events in the LA area focused on improving parenting skills, giving back to pediatric cancer research, and Fran Drescher’s Cancer Schmancer day long event at the Skirball Center

After the City Council announced a 100 million dollar pledge to help end homelessness throughout the city of Los Angeles, there was some doubt that the San Fernando Valley would see those funds, as often in the past the growing homelessness and need for resources in the Valley has gone ignored. The nonprofit Hope of the Valley reports LA City Council has stepped up as promised and they received information from the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority that they will be getting city funds to not only extend their cold weather shelters but increase them to more than double the capacity they were able to provide last year. We’ll have more on this positive progress in the following updates.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month and on the Day of Unity, October 1st, city leaders, domestic violence advocates and celebrities gathered for a press conference. They celebrated survivors and programs dedicated to helping victims, like the DART, domestic abuse response teams partnering with the Los Angeles Police and County Sheriff’s department. www.SafeLA.org details the city programs available. At the press conference former city councilman Dennis Zine spoke about these programs, and introduced celebrities like Taylor Armstrong and Tanya Brown, Nicole Simpson’s sister, who spoke of their personal experiences with Domestic Violence and their passion to stop the cycle. The press conference was organized by the nonprofit domestic violence program, Safe Passage.
