Science Star Shines with Online School

San Marcos student serves as a guest editor for Frontiers for Young Minds magazine

When Katherine Brenner was in 8th grade, her interest in school diminished and - as a result - her grades began to drop. Always a strong student, her parents were concerned that this was a result of not sufficiently being challenged in school. Not sure what to do to combat the boredom, they turned to their daughter for ideas. When Katherine suggested online school, they were hesitant. But, Katherine’s persistence made them pay attention - that and her business proposal to her parents about the California Virtual Academy @ San Diego (CAVA) and its benefits: flexibility, adaptable curriculum, and the ability to move at your own pace.

Katherine’s parents listened to their daughter’s plea to enroll in CAVA and they’re happy they did. For the past three years while enrolled in CAVA, Katherine has thrived. Katherine’s mother, Candice, is very happy with the program too – commending the supportive staff and outside opportunities that have come Katherine’s way.

Always a strong science student, Katherine’s teachers picked up on her interest and put her in touch with Frontiers magazine staff. Katherine serves as a guest editor for the magazines, reviewing articles for their youth magazine, Frontiers for Young Minds, to ensure that they’re readable for their audience.

Katherine has also found the opportunity to engage with other CAVA students through other extracurricular activities. She serves as the 11th grade president and regional president with the National Honors Society. Katherine also takes science classes at the local community college, Palomar Community College. She hopes to pursue either chemical engineering or pre-med when she attends college in the future.

Candice is so happy with CAVA that she has just enrolled her eight-grade son in CAVA this year.
