A free Memorial Day Observance will be held at the historic San Fernando Pioneer Memorial Cemetery in Sylmar from 11 a.m. to Noon on Monday, May 30, with a special dedication to the Civil War veterans buried at the 142-year-old graveyard. The cemetery is located at 14451 Bledsoe Street at the corner of Foothill Boulevard (halfway between the Roxford and Polk exits off the 210 Freeway.) The observance will include a rifle salute, U.S. flag-raising, and “Taps,” plus the unveiling of a new monument dedicated to the five Civil War veterans buried at the old burial ground. The monument is being placed by the Ancient & Honorable Order of E Clampus Vitus, Platrix Chapter No. 2, a fraternal society known for fun activities as well as historic preservation. There will be limited parking at the rear of the cemetery, so please carpool, if possible, and come early for the best seating. Gates open at 10 a.m. For additional information, call 818-970-1286.
