SIERRA MADRE, CA — A hiker died after falling into a ravine Saturday on Mount Wilson Trail in Sierra Madre, authorities said.
Emergency personnel responded around 1:45 p.m. to the scene, where the man had fallen into a ravine from the trail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which noted the man fell “a significant distance” and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The fall was reported to have occurred directly below the fixed rope section of the trail, according to the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team, which added that the victim was recovered from the mountain Saturday evening.
“The circumstances surrounding the fall remain under investigation; however, no foul play is suspected at this time,” the sheriff's department said in an email. “The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reminds hikers to exercise caution when navigating trails and be mindful of changing terrain conditions.”
The trail was closed Saturday due to the incident but had reopened by early Sunday morning, according to the Sierra Madre Police Department.
