Blog: Time to Build Sierra Madre's Middle School!
I felt compelled to reach out to school district decision makers and the community on the fate of Sierra Madre Middle School construction.
After reading this morning's Patch on the possible cuts on construction at Sierra Madre Middle School, I just had to write to the people in charge of making the decisions. Below is the letter I sent to the school board and administration today. I include their email addresses at the end, if you would like to voice your thoughts to them.
Dear PUSD Board and Administration:
I am appalled at the current situation for Sierra Madre based students in the Pasadena Unified School District. Though I no longer have school age children, I firmly believe in the power of an excellent public school education, and my own children attended public schools in California and Washington state. I covered local education for Sierra Madre Patch and cover education when assigned, along with other local topics, at Mountain Views News.

Through those publication avenues, I watched and reported on the progress toward a revitalized middle school campus in Sierra Madre over several years, since the bond issue was passed. I wrote several articles on progress toward the promised construction of the middle school here, and many PUSD related articles related to Sierra Madre.
Whaaaaaat happened? It seems Sierra Madre, though it is the banner school for improving school test scores, will now be doled the short end of the stick. With threats of budget shortfalls as the reason the new school cannot be completed, along with other reductions, it seems Sierra Madre is bearing the unfair brunt of the district’s woes.

PUSD is shooting their best performing schools in the foot, instead of using their successful performance and parent involvement model as the map toward a better performing district.
As a private concerned citizen, a voter and tax payer, I am aghast at this PUSD proposal. Give us our middle school, as promised, as voted on, and as already paid for through our taxes. Instead of holding your district “together” with these cuts, they will instead fracture the district and the community irreparably.
