Dog Ban in Playing Fields Starts Next Week

Starting Thursday March 29, dog owners will be issued a warning or a fine for bring their dogs onto ball fields in Sierra Madre.

The long-talked about ordinance banning dogs, both on and off-leash, on Sierra Madre's playing fields will finally go into effect next Thursday, March 29.

Dogs will no longer be allowed on Dapper Field, Heasley Field or Heasley T-Ball Field according to Ordinance 1328, which was

Violators could receive a warning or a fine of $100 for their first offense. A second offense could result in a citation of $250, and a third offense could mean a $500 fine. These are the standard fees for all Administrative Citation Fines in Sierra Madre.

The dog ban was originally suggested by the Community Services Commission, who say they have had difficulty maintaining the fields due to dog-caused damage in the form of defecating, urinating and digging.

The ordinance reads as follows:

Sierra Madre Municipal Code 6.04.090. Dogs Prohibited on designated playing fields.

Except seeing eye or other certified service dogs on leash or dogs used by public law enforcement agencies, no person owning, having a proprietary interest in, harboring or having the care, charge, control, custody or possession of a dog shall permit such dog to be upon any designated playing field grounds, regardless of whether the dog is on or off leash.  Designated playing fields include:

1. Dapper Field

2. Heasley Field, including the t-ball field
