SONOMA VALLEY, CA — A sprawling 1,119-acre ranch on Sonoma Mountain sold for $38.5 million, setting a Sonoma County residential sales record after its owner spent more than $30 million renovating the property.
The property, dubbed "The Summit," sits at 3100 Sonoma Mountain Road in the Sonoma Valley area near Glen Ellen.
Tech entrepreneur and conservation advocate Don McKinney purchased the ranch for $12 million in 2014, according to records.
He later spent more than $30 million renovating the estate before bringing it to market for about $50 million in 2025, according to reports.
The property returned to the market in May for $39.99 million.
Records show the property closed for $38.5 million.
Real estate records lists the main property at 14,966 square feet, with 10 bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and three half bathrooms. The residence was built in 2016.
The estate includes private lakes, pump houses, greenhouses, swimming holes, barns, and extensive privacy.
The property's marketing materials also describe multiple residences, canyon systems, oak groves, three greenhouses, extensive water resources, and backup power.
The sale surpassed the previous $30 million Sonoma County record set in 2010, according to Dreyfus and Eddy.
Public records identify the McKinney Family Trust as the owner of record at 3100 Sonoma Mountain Road.
McKinney also created Sonoma Mountain Ranch II LLC, a Delaware limited liability company registered in California in February 2024.
The identity of the new owner remains undisclosed.
