Highway 101 Overcrossing In Sonoma County Named In Honor Of Fallen Sheriff's Deputies

All three lost their lives in helicopter crashes.

SONOMA COUNTY, CA — An overcrossing on U.S. Highway 101 at Airport Boulevard in Sonoma County has been dedicated to three Sonoma County sheriff's deputies who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The crossing northwest of the city of Santa Rosa was named last week the "Detective Sergeant Ed Wilkinson, Deputy Sheriff Brent Jameson, and Deputy Sheriff Bliss Magly Memorial Overcrossing."

All three lost their lives in helicopter crashes.

Detective Sgt. Wilkinson died in an April 1977 crash, while Jameson and Magly both died in a crash in heavy fog in 1980.

Wilkinson was returning to Sonoma County airport after searching for a missing 9-year-old girl when the helicopter ran out of fuel, the county said in a news release.

Deputy Jameson and Deputy Magly both died in a crash in heavy fog in October 1980. That crash happened about a half-mile south of the airport while the two were searching for a shooting suspect.

A ceremony to mark the dedication will be held sometime in October.

The county earmarked $20,000 for the change in signage. The change was formally made through state legislation sponsored by state Sen. Mike McGuire.
