SONOMA COUNTY, CA — A Sonoma man has been sentenced to 28 years in state prison for raping his cousin, prosecutors said.

Perez Murillo lived with the family of the victim and she "looked up to her older cousin like a trusted brother," prosecutors said.

The assault took place in her bedroom on Oct. 18, 2025, after the two had been out for the evening, according to prosecutors.

The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office arranged for the victim to record a telephone call with Perez Murillo, during which he admitted to details of the assault, prosecutors said.

A jury found him guilty in May. It additionally found the crimes were aggravated because Perez Murillo held a position of trust, according to the District Attorney's Office.
