Cause Behind Damaged South Gate Sign Unknown

The Public Works Department is looking for funds to rehabilitate the broken down monument.

The South Gate sign that is currently located on Atlantic Avenue near the intersection with Abbott Road has seen better days. The monument that welcomes those entering South Gate from Lynwood is in a dilapidated state.

“We were informed a few weeks ago that it was hit,” said Mohammad Moskhatami, Director of Public Work for the city of South Gate. “ We have no idea how it was hit or who hit it.”

The city is currently looking for the money and specialists to fix the damage to the sign.  Financing during these tough economic times is considered to be the most difficult part.

“Funding is always an issue,” admitted Moskhatami.

The cost associated with this structural rehabilitation is expected to be between $15,000-$20,000.

“We are planning to work on this once we identify the funding and a contractor,” said Moskhatami. “This may take us three weeks or another couple months.”
