Washington, DC – Congresswoman Janice Hahn (D-San Pedro) welcomed Kevin Estrada, the winner of her district’s Annual Congressional Art Competition, to the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, June 24.
Kevin, a junior at Lynwood High School, his father, and younger sister were flown to Washington D.C. to attend a special ceremony with other first place winners from districts all around the country. While in Washington, he met with the Congresswoman, and together they visited his artwork, which is now hanging in the U.S. Capitol, where it will remain for a year and be seen by Members of Congress, Congressional staff and visitors.

“Kevin is a talented young man with a great attitude and it’s exciting to see his art on display in our nation’s Capitol,” said Congresswoman Hahn. “The subject of his work is an ordinary Lynwood fire hydrant, but he put it in perspective and made it extraordinary. His piece grabs the attention of viewers, and I am looking forward to seeing it every day on my way to votes.”
Kevin and his family were very excited to be visiting the U.S. Capitol for the first time. They enjoyed the ceremony and a tour of the Capitol today and plan to explore DC over the next few days.

“This was pretty big for me,” said Kevin, who has been creating artwork for almost his entire life.
The winning artwork was selected from 70 pieces submitted by high school students throughout Congresswoman Hahn’s district and showcased in the Croatian Cultural Center in San Pedro, CA.
It has yet to be decided whether winning artists can win multiple competitions but Kevin plans to continue making art and if eligible he says, “I am definitely going to enter again next year!”
