Councilmembers Express Concerns over Red-Light Cameras

Complaints by residents led two councilmembers to ask for more information.

Last Tuesday evening, Councilmember Jorge Morales spoke about complaints that he received from residents over local red-light cameras.  Morales asked the South Gate Police Department (SGPD) to provide him with a detailed report.

“I am not a big fan of the cameras,” admitted Morales during last Tuesday's regular City Council meeting. "[However,] I want to make an informed decision to see whether I can push the council to eliminate them or give talking points to the residents when they bring up the issue.”

Councilmember Henry Gonzalez also said that he was not a supporter of these cameras. Expressing concerns over their cost-effectiveness and the expensive citations that they give.

“I think we got the same call,” said Gonzalez to Morales. “I think [this] is something that we should discuss.”

Chief of Police Randy Davis was present during the City Council meeting and said  that he was aware of some of the complaints.  Confirming that the cost of a traffic fine from running a red light is costly and stands at $490.

“[The report] will be very comprehensive,” said Davis, who added that it could be compiled by early next month.
