Deputy Kills Man in 'Struggle' for Weapon Near Lynwood

COMPTON (CNS) - A man struggling with a sheriff's deputy over his weapon was shot to death on a Compton street, authorities said today.

The shooting in the 12800 block of Cookacre Avenue near Atlantic Avenue, close to Lynwood, occurred around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday, said Deputy Peter Gomez of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau, adding that the suspect died at the scene while the deputy suffered no significant injury.

The deputy was detaining the man -- ``a 35-year-old Hispanic adult pedestrian'' -- when he ran off, triggering a brief chase, Gomez said.

"The suspect then engaged the deputy and began fighting with (him),'' Gomez said. "During the fight, the suspect attempted to gain control of the deputy's weapon, resulting in a deputy-involved hit shooting.''

The sheriff's department did not immediately disclose why the man had been detained.

As is standard in deputy-involved shootings in which a suspect is killed, an investigation was being conducted by the Sheriff's Homicide and Internal Affairs bureaus, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's and coroner's offices, and the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review, according to a sheriff's department statement.
