Family Dollar to Expand in South Gate

Family Dollar, the regional chain of discount variety stores, is currently looking to expand its business with several South Gate locations. Steve Lefever, Director of Community Development, confirmed the company’s interest, and said that it was part of their countywide expansion.

“Family Dollar is in the midst of a major expansion program in Los Angeles County,” said Lefever.   “As part of that expansion effort, they are looking at three locations in South Gate.” 

The first store is located at 9507 Long Beach Boulevard. Building permits have already been issued for this site, Family Dollar signs are up and construction is underway.  However, the city could not confirm on an opening date for the business.

“I do not have a projected opening date,” admitted Lefever. ”But it should be relatively soon.” 

Family Dollar is also seriously considering to expand with another store. The discount chain is already in negotiations with a local property owner, and has constructions plans for a second site on Firestone Boulevard, according to city staff.

The retailer is also said to be looking at the possibility of a third location on the east side of South Gate. However, Lefever warns that it is still too early to tell where it would be located, if succesful. 

“The discount retailer and property owner are still in the early stages of negotiations,” said Lefever, in reference to the third location. “So no details are available at this time.”
