Gang Member Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Mail

Javier Vega Bejar of Bell has been arrested.

SOUTH GATE (CNS) - A gang member with a lengthy criminal history was arrested for allegedly stealing mail, South Gate police reported today.

An officer patrolling near Tweedy Boulevard and San Miguel Avenue about 10 p.m. Monday saw ``a suspicious person near a parked vehicle'' and decided to investigate, according to a South Gate police statement.

The officer spotted a stack of opened and unopened mail inside the vehicle and noticed a variety of different names on the envelopes, none of which belong to the suspect or the other person with him, according to police.

The officer also located ``contraband commonly used to `fish' mail out of a United States postal box'' and took Javier Vega Bejar, 25, of Bell, into custody, according to the statement prepared by Lt. Darren Arakawa.
