Gas Station to Remain Closed Until Further Notice
City officials stated that problems between the operator and owner of the gas station led to its closing.

The former Mobil station on the corner of Firestone Boulevard and California Avenue will remain closed until a new tenant is found. The station's owner, Exxon Mobil, had been having issues with the tenant that operated it.
“It has been closed because of testing and other related issues between the site operator, and the oil company,” said Steve Lefever, Community Development Director for the city of South Gate.

The station has not pumped gas since February 2011, and has not operated its mechanic services for several months. New handicap bathrooms were added, as well as other requirements. The building is now within full compliance to operate.
“Everything was in compliance as of last week,” said William Campana, building official for South Gate. “Unfortunately the tenant and the landlord have some internal problems.”

The misunderstandings between the operator have gotten in the way of re-opening the station. Two weeks ago both the owner, and the tenant decided to fully close the business, and fenced off the station.
However, city officials are optimistic that it will soon be open, stating that Exxon Mobil is looking for a buyer or new tenant.
“After Exxon Mobil completed the jobs they got a certificate of occupancy to offer the business,” said Campana, who has heard about the discussions with potential tenants and buyers. “I have heard about Circle K, they operate mini marts as well as gas pumps, so the station could potentially become that.”
