Gateway Man Shot, Killed Returning From Liquor Store ID'd

The shooting occurred about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 2000 block of North Santa Fe Avenue, police said.

COMPTON, CA - The coroner's office on Monday released the name of a man shot and killed near an apartment complex in Compton last week.

He was 31-year-old Antonio Lopez of Compton, said coroner's Lt. Larry Dietz. An autopsy was pending.

The shooting occurred about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 2000 block of North Santa Fe Avenue, according to Deputy Lisa Jansen of the Sheriff's Information Bureau. Lopez died at a hospital, she said.

"Detectives have learned that the victim had just crossed Santa Fe Avenue coming from the local liquor store," she said. "As he approached the apartment complex, a male ... walked up behind him and fired several rounds, striking the victim."
