'I Love South Gate' Logo Contest Winners To Be Awarded Tuesday

Osvaldo Martinez and Alicia Estrada create award-winning logo and slogan to represent South Gate.

South Gate residents had a chance to show their community pride this summer by participating in the “I Love South Gate” logo contest launched by the Commission for South Gate Youth. Out of the many entries, two winners have been chosen and will be awarded at the National Night Out Event on Tuesday.

In early June, the youth commission invited the people who represent South Gate, local businesses, community members and students, to design a logo unique to South Gate.

Osvaldo Martinez and Alicia Estrada are the winners of the first “I Love South Gate” logo contest.

According to Nellie Cobos, assistant to the city manager and Public Information Officer for the city of South Gate, the phrase was a constant sentiment expressed by community members.

“The phrase of 'I Love South Gate' kept coming up with different people,” said Cobos. “The South Gate Youth Commission launched a contest to create a theme and logo around that phrase.”

Designs were to be “simple, sharp and eye-catching and reflect the chosen city slogan, "Our Community ... Our Family,'' according to the commission.

Martinez’s winning logo and Estrada’s winning slogan will be used on t-shirts, community event materials, banners and flyers.

The design and slogan will be presented at the National Night Out event and the two will also be awarded the $100 prize.

National Night Out will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 7 at South Gate Park Senior Center, 4855 Tweedy Blvd.
