Local Library Receives Grant For Renovations

The renovations will result in a larger teen section, new carpeting, paintjob and a self-checkout machine.

The Leland R. Weaver library on Tweedy Boulevard will experience some improvements within the coming year. This is all thanks to a grant from the office of the Los Angeles County District 1 Supervisor, Gloria Molina.

“She has always been a great supporter of our libraries,” said Kenneth Kramer, public affairs manager of the Los Angeles County library system. “[Molina has] always been an advocate for the libraries.”

Since the library first opened to the public in 1973 not much has changed. The money will be used to install a new carpet, to give it a fresh coat of paint and some new furniture.

A new floor plan will also be created, which will include a larger teen section, two new study rooms and restrooms that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The library will also have a new self-check out machine. The mechanism will be similar to those used in grocery stores.

“The machines are very, very popular,” said Kramer.  “We’re bringing the library into the 21st century.”

The timeline for the renovations is still in the planning stages, but work is expected to begin in December.

The library will be closed for the duration of the renovations. However, organizers are looking for a temporary solution that can meet South Gate’s library needs, while the renovations are taking place.

“The library will be in operation for the meantime,” affirmed Kramer.
