Lynwood Centennial Celebrates HerStory Original Text

This weekend, the City of Lynwood celebrated Women’s History Month with “Making HerStory,” as local women joined Mayor Marisela Santana, the Lynwood City Council, members of the Lynwood Unified School Board and community leaders.

Councilmember Rita Soto was the keynote speaker as she told her story of perseverance as an immigrant from Mexico who learned English, worked toward her graduate degree and was elected to the City Council, all while raising a family.

Other leaders who shared their stories included LUSD’s Assistant Superintendent Dr. Shawna Petit-Dinkins, Century Station Captain Yolanda Figueroa and LUSD School Board Member Alma Castro.

Music was also a big part of the celebration and included a beautiful rendition of Mariah Carey’s “Hero” by Natalia Rubio and a dance party with Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.”
