Olympic Oops! Another Day, Another Flag Problem in London

Regional politics and national flags take the top spot on the podium as the Games get underway

London Olympic Games Officials are red-faced after their second national flag mishap in two days.

The latest controversy came today, when Chinese officials were incensed by the showing of a Taiwanese flag in an Olympic Games display of national flags in a London shopping district.  After China strongly protested to the British Foreign Office and Olympic officials, the Taiwan flag was replaced by the flag of the Taiwanese Olympic Federation.

China does not recognize Taiwan politically and considers it a rebel province. Under an agreement, Taiwanese athletes compete in the Olympics under the TOF flag and the name Chinese Taipei.

Today’s incident came as Games officials are still trying to figure out how a South Korean flag was displayed on a scoreboard with photos of North Korean women’s soccer team prior to Tuesday’s match against Columbia.   North Korea’s team left the field for over an hour before getting permission to play from Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un.  North Korea eventually won the match 2-0.

According to Yahoo, Games chiefs have ordered an immediate review of all digital images relating to statistics and information at Olympics venues before Saturday's official start of competition.
