South East High School Announced as a Recipient of CompareCards "Financially Literate Youth" Grant

School to use $5,000 to Purchase Materials to Implement Common Core State Standards.

CompareCards launched a grant program earlier this year designed to help offset the costs associated with preparing a financial education program in K-12 school. They recently announced the four winners of their Financially Literate Youth (FLY) program.

The $20,000, awarded by CompareCards, will be used for financial literacy programs in four schools located across the country.

South East High School will be receiving one of the four $5,000 grants, which will be used to purchase textbooks and various technologies that will assist them in implementing the Common Core Standards for mathematics.

“One of South East High School’s Core Value is to become a 21st Century teaching and learning institution.

To accomplish this goal, we are committed to providing a rigorous curriculum that encourages students to explore higher education and expand career opportunities,” said Jesus Nunez, Principal of South East High School.

“This would not be possible without incorporating technology, Common Core State Standards, and real-world learning opportunities to make learning meaningful and purposeful for all students.”

The grant funding will allow students to use technology to connect mathematics to real life and provide them with the ability to financially justify small decisions such as graduating, investing time in finding educational grants, and long-term return on investments such as 401k’s, Roth IRA, etc.

“South East High School’s plan to purchase technology, apps, and materials for students will allow them to effectively implement Common Core and provide an opportunity for real world examples to better prepare students for their financial future,” said Chris Mettler, founder of CompareCards.

FLY applications were evaluated based on the quality and feasibility of their proposed or existing program(s) and the potential of their program to effectively educate youth about financial choices.

“We wanted to expand upon our financial education offerings and provide funding for schools to implement a program of their choosing, whether that be to assist with technology or launch a new program altogether,” said Mettler. “Our grant program is unique because of the low barrier to apply and the limited restrictions on how schools can use the funding. We were very pleased with the applications we received and the important programs that will be implemented.”
