South Gate Police Issue Burglary Scam Alert

The con has already been reported in Los Angeles County.

The South Gate Police Department (SGPD) has issued an alert to residents about a burglary scam that has been reported in the county of Los Angeles and Orange.  The con involves supposed utility workers claiming that there is problem with the backyard of a home.

“The Suspect(s) will tell the unsuspecting homeowner that he/she has a real problem in their backyard that they need to look at right now,” warned an SGPD statement. “Suspects will attempt to lure the homeowner into the backyard, oftentimes confusing the victim into leaving their front door unlocked.”

After leaving an unlocked door to their home a second accomplice will enter. The suspect will then steal money, jewelry and valuables. Elderly residents are said to be the most at risk.

“Suspects appear to be intentionally targeting people between the ages of 60 and 90 years of age,” warns the SGPD in a press release. “[Residences] where there [are] only 1 or 2 people in the home.”

There are currently no descriptions of the suspects that carry out this scam. However, the SGPD reports that they have been  said to dress in construction style fashion and making use of communication devices.

No incidents of this particular type of crime have currently been reported in South Gate. The SGPD wanrs residents that this could very well happen locally and has in the past.

“While there are no recent reports here in South Gate, similar types of crimes have [in the past] occurred in the city,” said the SGPD in a statement.  “Suspects appear to be moving from city to city and may in the future come to South Gate.”

The SGPD encourages residents to call them at 323-563-5436 if they suspect foul play.
