South Gate Police Look for Hit and Run Suspect

The vehicle involved has already been impounded.

Last night, Tuesday at approximately 9:15 p.m., the South Gate Police Department (SGPD) reportedly received a call from the victim of an alleged hit and run incident, which took place near the intersection of Missouri Avenue and Virginia Avenue.

“We received a call from the victim of a hit and run,” said Sargent Ignacio Patiño of the SGPD, who was serving as the evening’s  Watch Commander. “[The victim] said that he was currently following the suspected vehicle.”

The police went on to tell Patch that no one was injured in the incident and that the alleged victim’s vehicle only sustained some damage. Once SGPD officers caught up with the suspect they attempted to initiate a traffic stop near the intersection of Madison Avenue and Iowa Avenue.

“The suspect’s vehicle failed to yield to the officers,” said Sgt. Patiño. “The failure to yield lasted approximately three minutes and covered a distance of about a mile.”

According to the SGPD, the suspect eventually drove into the driveway of an apartment complex in Iowa Avenue and proceeded to escape by foot.  The officers continued the chase, but lost the suspect at the 3000 block of Southern Avenue.

“Officers pursued, but lost him,” said Sgt. Patiño.

The SGPD is still currently on the lookout for the suspect, who has been described as a male Hispanic in his twenties. The SGPD also stated that, for he moment, he is wanted for the hit and run.

“The only thing we have done is impounded the vehicle,” said Sgt. Patiño. “It is a [1993] Honda Accord.”

The incident will be further investigated by the SGPD, who has for the moment classified the incident as a misdemeanor.
