South Gate Resident Killed in Compton

The incident occurred a week ago, and his identity has just been released.

COMPTON (CNS) - A man fatally shot at a party in Compton a week ago, shortly before sheriff's deputies arrived and wounded a gunman, was identified today an 18-year-old South Gate resident.

Edward Damian was found fatally shot as deputies responded to reports of a loud July 1 party in the 500 block of South Long Beach Boulevard about 2:30 a.m., according to sheriff's deputies and coroner's spokesman. The name of the man wounded by deputies was not made public.

It was unclear if he was the one who shot Damian, or if anyone was arrested in connection with his death. At the time, sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker said a deputy sent to the address heard gunshots, saw a man with a gun in his hand and shot him.

That man was taken to a hospital in critical condition, deputies said. The coroner's spokesman who identified Damian said the name was not made public for a week because a sheriff's detective had placed a ``security hold'' on it.

No explanation for the hold was given.
