Tips: Using Fireworks Safely

The South Gate Police Department urges people to only use legal fireworks, but also to do so safely.

The South Gate Police Department (SGPD) wants everyone to be careful using fireworks. Below are some basic safety tips  written by Captain Keith Hupp of the SGPD.

All fireworks should be considered dangerous, whether they are illegal or listed as “safe and sane”. Safe and Sane fireworks are those fireworks that can be legally purchased at licensed fireworks stands.  The following precautions should always be taken, even with the legal (safe and sane) fireworks.

1.       Keep a garden hose nearby

2.       Keep a pail of water next to where “safe and sane” fireworks are used and dispose of used and “dud” fireworks into the pail of water prior to disposal.

3.       Follow manufacturer directions on use of all legal fireworks

4.       Keep matches and lighters away from children.

5.       Keep a responsible adult present at all times when fireworks are being used.

6.       Do not store unused fireworks.

7.       Keep all pets indoors on the 4th of July as fireworks tend to scare animals and many pets runaway and are lost each year on July 4th.
