Blog: Iron Lady Leaves Indelible Mark on this Photographer

Longest serving PM dies from stroke.

I had the pleasure of meeting the "Iron Lady", as she was originally dubbed as a an insult, during a visit here in L.A. in the 1980's.

Britain's longest serving prime minister of the 20th century, Margaret Thatcher, passed away this week. The only female PM ever to serve in that capacity was felled by a stroke.

I found her to be charming but very proud and businesslike. She had a no-nonsense approach and even coached me on how to take her photo, but in a polite manner. At the conclusion of her visit, she thanked me for taking her pictures and said she hoped she was not to much of a burden. I thanked her and told her that I hoped I was not to obtrusive. She assured me I was not.

Watching her interact with those she met, I found her charming and easy to talk to. I have photographed numerous historical figures during my career, but she is definitely one figure who will not be forgotten.
