Blog: Dadmissions on the Pumpkin Patch

Dadmissions proves he's a pumpkin patch pushover.

There we were surrounded by pumpkins, parents, and kids and it finally clicked to me: this pumpkin patch had NOTHING to do with pumpkins.

OK maybe some of them do but not the one we were at. This weekend we got to the pumpkin festival in Pomona and decided to wait until the end to get the pumpkins so we didn't need to carry them around. Mistake number one. We should have gotten the pumpkins right away and asked the kids to carry them so we would have needed to go to the car in a nanosecond to drop them off when they didn't want to carry them.

But we didn't.

Instead, we took the kids around and surveyed the pumpkin patch. Mistake number two with several more to follow. The kids saw a pony ride. Bingo. They were in. They've seen ponies before but never ponies surrounded by pumpkins so they had to ride them. And they did. The kids saw a petting zoo. They've seen petting zoos before but never a petting zoo surrounded by pumpkins so they needed to enter. And they did. The kids saw face painting. They've seem face painting before but never face painting surrounded by pumpkins so they desperately needed to get it done. And they did. The kids saw snow cones, fresh honey, and fresh squeezed orange juice. They've seen snow cones, fresh honey, and fresh squeezed orange juice before but never surrounded by pumpkins so they really, really wanted to buy them.

And we did.

They played games, had fun, walked a ton, spent a good chunk of change, and at the end of it all, were too tired to face the crowds, to go through the fields, to pick the pumpkins that we came there to pick in the first place. So we left. And we ended up going to the little pumpkin patch in the center of our town [Mission Street and Fremont Avenue] to get our pumpkins instead. Yeh I may be a pumpkin patch pushover but the kids had a ton of fun. And while the pumpkin patch we first went to had nothing to do with pumpkins, and the second one we went to had everything to do with pumpkins, both were a success.

Dadmissions survived both pumpkin patches even if his wallet was spooked with quite a scare. Happy Halloween.
