Patch Blog: '80s Jams at Pasadena's Summer Soundzz Friday
This is week is the final concert of the Summer Soundzz series hosted by Pasadena Entertainment and the Pasadena Convention Center.
Last Thursday Aug. 4, Big Sam's Funky Nation made a special apperance in Pasadena for Summer Soundzz. The New Orleans funk band is on tour for Louie Armstrong's 110th birthday, in which they are on the road for 110 days straight performing all over the country. Luckily they decided to fit Pasadena in on that tour list, and it even coincided with Pasadena's 125 Birthday Celebration!
Opening for the band was local native, Byron Miller, and friends. Byron is a talented musician, who has played bass for Carlos Santana, Chaka Kahn, Marvin Gaye and Whitney Houston. They played some smooth jazz while the crowd thickened for Big Sam's Funky Nation.
Once Big Sam hit the stage, everyone was motivated to get to the dance floor and shake those hips! People from all ages were having a good time and enjoying the funk sounds from New Orleans. The guitarist was phenomenal- his name was Takeshi Shimmura. Although a quiet, soft-spoken individual when you meet him in person, boy oh boy did he talk with that guitar of his! Overall, it seemed as though everyone had a fabulous time.

After the concert, the party moved 2 blocks down Green Street to the point08 bar. This small jazz lounge and mixology bar inspired some talented musicans to create an amazing jam session. It was one of those moments when you realize you are in the midst of something great with talented performers. Makes me want to learn how to play the drums or the bass—one of these days it will happen!
