Patch Blog: Comic Play at Library Saturday

The brand new play is a family-friendly comedy.

"The Pirate Laureate of Port Town," a zany comedy by the Mutineer Theatre Company will be presented in the Library's on Saturday, June 23 at 2:00 p.m.

The free, family-friendly program is co-sponsored by the South Pasadena Public Library and the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library. The play, written by Zachary Fernebok and directed by Chil Kong, is produced by Stephanie Wu and Jon Cohn.

It’s currently enjoying a world premiere run at the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2012 at the Actors Circle Theatre in West Hollywood. The cast of “The Pirate Laureate of Port Town” features all Mutineer Theatre Company members: Liz Brown, Jon Cohn, Amber Hamilton, Ginger Steiner, Todd Veneman, and Mark Withers.

In “The Pirate Laureate of Port Town,” the bloodthirsty captain of the feared Chartreuse plans to plunder and pillage Port Town. Determined to settle an old score, he is depending on Finn, the ship’s poet to rally the misfit crew into attacking the Lighthouse Mansion of the Governess Cesealia.

Chil Kong began his directing career on a scholarship at the Boston Conservancy, where he studied Directing and Musical Theater. Upon leaving, he traveled to the San Diego Repertory Theater, where he became a Director in Residence.  He subsequently served as Artistic Director at the North West Asian American Theater in Seattle and later journeyed to Los Angeles to start a theater company.

Mr. Kong has been a member of ABC/Disney’s Directing Program and has worked on “Brothers and Sisters,” “Desperate Housewives,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” He currently serves as an adjunct professor of theater and digital media and video production at Cal Poly, Pomona.

Zachary Fernebok is a playwright and actor from Washington, D.C. He is also the 2011/2012 Playwright in Residence for the American Ensemble Theatre. His plays have been most recently produced by the American Conservatory Theatre, American Ensemble Theatre, the National Portrait Gallery, and others. He works full time as the Program Manager of the Writer’s Center, and teaches playwriting to kids and teens with Writopia Lab D.C.

The South Pasadena Library Community Room is located at 1115 El Centro Street. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. and no tickets or reservations are needed.
