Patch Blog: Dadmissions on Life Lessons

Pete Wilgoren is surrounded by a wife and two little girls. He doesn't stand a chance. Find him on Facebook at "Dadmissions The Book."

Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get.

So today, when I made breakfast for the girls and the little one accidentally dropped a glass of milk on the floor, I knew right away there's no sense crying over spilled milk. The girls both looked at me like I had two heads and maybe it's just that misery loves company.

But I've learned a thing or two about kids and I know you only hurt the ones you love. It made me think, and that's not always a good thing because as we all know, curiosity killed the cat. These girls are so footloose and fancy free. I know beauty is only skin deep, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but trust me, these two girls are beautiful inside and out.

So I'm like most parents, and I always worry because if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all. While I know an apple a day keeps the doctor away, and laughter is the best medicine, how do I know the girls will grow up to be healthy, wealthy and wise. The grass is always greener on the other side I guess, but it's better to be safe than sorry. And it's not just beauty and health.

I want the girls to be successful in life. Sure you might say success stories are a dime a dozen.  I know money is the root of all evil, and time is money, but money doesn't grow on trees, and I think we can all agree money makes the world go round. There's no question diamonds are a girl's best friend and I want nothing but the best for my girls in health, money, and love because even though all's fair in love and war, we all know love conquers all.

They say nice guys finish last, and beggars can't be choosers, but I'm living proof that opposites attract, and now with a wife and two great kids, I have the best of both worlds. So let's agree not to sweat the small stuff because this too shall pass. You're only young once and there's no time to waste because time flies when you're having fun and eventually we'll all be pushing up daisies.

One day the girls will be all grown up, but I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. For the time being they're two peas in a pod, birds of a feather that flock together, best friends who know a friend in need is a friend indeed.  There's no question their hearts are in the right place.

And even though you can't teach an old dog new tricks, and I wasn't born yesterday, I promise to be patient with the girls even when I wake up on the wrong side of the bed, because patience is a virtue, have it if you can, often in a woman and seldom in a man.

Now, some might accuse me of being stubborn as a mule, but I really do know I have more work to do to be a better dad, because actions speak louder than words, and if you're gonna talk the talk, you better walk the walk.

The more things change the more they stay the same I guess. That's the way the cookie crumbles.
