Down Goes Huntington! SPMS 7th Grade Football Team Finishes in Style

The 7th Grade Football Tiger Cubs finished their 2014 season in style with a thrilling, come from behind 18-12 victory over rivals Huntington Middle School in front of a cheering home crowd on Tuesday, October 28. According to coach Ricky Gutierrez, this was the first regular season win for SPMS versus our San Marino rivals in at least five years. The game was played with high emotion from start to finish, with the Tigers even able to overcome the presence of Huntington’s travelling pep squad on the sidelines. Down 12-6 at half time, the Tiger Cubs rallied in the second half. After Matthew Iwane scored his second touchdown to tie the score at 12, Huntington appeared to be marching for the go ahead score as they were at the South Pas 18-yard line with under two minutes to go. That’s when the SPMS defense came up big. The defensive line was able to pressure Huntington’s QB into lofting a soft pass toward the end zone that Joseph Lee intercepted and returned close to midfield. Just seconds later, Iwane went around the right end 60 yards for his third TD of the game to put South Pas ahead for good at 18-12. The SPMS Booster Club wishes to congratulation to the entire 7th grade team on a successful season!
