The South Pasadena Preservation puts it all together for Sunday afternoon, June 23, starting at 4 pm. The first treat is a rare opportunity to tour a Mid-Century Modern classic residence designed by its owner, Whitney Smith. It’s a well hidden “house in a garden” at 209 Beacon Av., recently listed as a local landmark, but only rarely open to the public.
The second feature follows a very short walk just around the corner to the other end of South Pasadena’s architectural spectrum at 919 Columbia St. This is a Victorian manor built in 1885 in final stages of restoration, but currently vacant. It’s a great place to enjoy refreshments and annual meeting festivities featuring a presentation by architectural historian Deborah Howell-Ardila on what makes the Whit Smith House, which you will have just visited, so special.
If that’s not enough to draw your attention, hold on to your hats, folks. The Preservation Foundation will provide the first public opportunity for attendees to see and contribute their own memories and comments to Jeff Burke’s interactive photo mural of current properties on Mission Street in South Pasadena.
The interactive photo mural is a 40 foot long panorama entitled “Mission Street Memories” that in coming months will be sealed in the Preservation Foundation’s time capsule celebrating the city’s 125th Anniversary. The time capsule will be unearthed at the South Pasadena Bicentennial celebration in the year 2088. Adding your thoughts and recollections to current streetscape photos will assure that your children, grandchildren, and their children, will have access to archival keepsakes of your own community memories.
The South Pasadena Preservation Foundation Annual Meeting is open to the public and free. New members are especially welcome and donations greatly appreciated.
