Memorial Day Service at War Memorial Park

Speaking at the ceremony led by Mayor Mike Ten, will be a veteran of the Korean War and former Council member David Margrave.

UPDATE: Tibor Rubin has committed to another event in Del Mar and will not be speaking at the South Pasadena Memorial Day service on Monday.

Wednesday, May 26 Mayor Mike Ten will lead a Memorial Day service at the  Monday, May 30 at 9:00 a.m. Speaking at the ceremony will be Tibor Rubin, a veteran of the Korean War who received a Medal of Honor. 

"Ours is a small hometown event to keep tradition by honoring our sons and daughters who have protected our liberties," said Ten, who resurrected the Memorial Day service in 2004 after it had been cancelled for decades.

Former South Pasadena City Council member David Margrave will also be present Monday to discuss War Memorial Park and how the grounds pay tribute to those that have lost their lives in war. Ten will later lead a tour of the War Memorial Building Legion Room, which contains vintage war posters restored last year by Boy Scout Lorenz Von Bibra and unique artifacts from American Legion Post 140 organized in 1919. 

Formally called Decoration Day and designated as a time for the nation to adorn the graves of those who died in the Civil War with flowers, it wasn't until after World War I that the day was expanded to honor those who have died in all American wars.

After visiting South Pas, Tubin will head over to Highland Park at York Boulevard and Figueroa Street for a 11:00 a.m. ceremony. Born June 18, 1929, Rubin is a Hungarian-born Holocaust survivor who immigrated to the U.S. in 1948. He is being sponsored by the Highland Park American Legion Post 206.
