Road Rage Suspect Leads CHP On Violent High-Speed Chase: UPDATED [VIDEO]

LOS ANGELES, CA — A violent, high-speed chase involving the California Highway Patrol and a road rage suspect criss-crossed the Los Angeles region at speeds near 100 miles per hour Wednesday afternoon.

Throughout the chase, which began with a road rage incident involving a marked San Gabriel Police patrol, the driver of an SUV made aggressive maneuvers even sideswiping a CHP car before crashing and being taken into custody, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Stephan Brandt.

The San Gabriel Police Department notified the CHP about 11:30 a.m. that a civilian police employee had been the victim of an attempted assault with a vehicle.

"Subsequently, San Gabriel police officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle traveling westbound on the I-10 freeway at Rosemead Boulevard," SGPD Lt. Rene Lopez said.

The suspect refused to yield and a chase ensued.

The CHP eventually took over the pursuit, which wound through the East Hollywood area, with the suspect occasionally using the SUV to push through stalled traffic and side-swiping vehicles in his path.

The chase went onto the southbound Hollywood (101) Freeway. About noon, the SUV -- a white Nissan Rogue with Colorado plates -- and the police vehicles transitioned onto the southbound Harbor (110) Freeway through south Los Angeles.

The suspect eventually exited the freeway in the Wilmington area, winding through sometimes-congested city streets and even passing through a construction zone. He then got back on the northbound 110 Freeway in the Carson area then moved east on the Artesia (91) Freeway.

"During the pursuit, the suspect intentionally rammed two CHP vehicles in an attempt to elude law enforcement," Lopez said.

In one of those incidents, the suspect appeared to swerve across all lanes of the 91 Freeway and hit the side of a CHP SUV.

At about 12:40 p.m., the speeding suspect tried to exit the 91 Freeway at Norwalk Boulevard in the Cerritos area, but he clipped a slightly raised median and lost control of the Nissan, which went into a spin and wound up rolling backward into some brush alongside the offramp.

After several minutes, the suspect got out a rear door of the SUV, crouching beside the vehicle in an attempt to see where police were positioned. He got back in the vehicle, but a few moments later crawled out a window and tried to flee on foot.

Police deployed a dog, which chased the suspect down and subdued him until officers caught up and took the man into custody. The suspect could be seen continuing to yell and acting belligerently as police tried to put him into a patrol unit. Paramedics later arrived at the scene to treat the suspect for dog bites.

The suspect, whose name was not immediately available, was taken into custody on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and felony evading, Lopez said.
