Under the Mask

Revealing what is morally correct.

It is now mandatory across the country to wear a mask when going outside. Unfortunately, that’s not an easy task for many people. But what about the masks being worn underneath the mandatory face masks?

The cashier at the grocery store tells me she can’t wait to go home, so she can take off her mask. She’s very unhappy. Although I can sympathize with her feeling slightly uncomfortable, at the same time I can’t help but wonder what she would say if she didn’t have one? Would it be something like, we aren’t being protected enough? We are very fortunate to live in a society where we have so much.

We could all use a reminder of just how grateful we should be in our circumstances, especially being well. Hundreds of miles away on the Pine Ridge reservation there is cause for alarm. The tribes are taking matters in their own hands by setting up highway health check points for outside essential workers and travelers that are driving through the reservation. The main concern is to protect the Indigenous people living there from the spread of Covid 19. The closest ICU is a hundred miles away. Although our government is obligated under a treaty to provide the necessary health care supplies and funding, the system is depleted. The thousands of people on the Pine Ridge are left with four ventilators.

The governor of South Dakota has threatened to sue the tribes for blocking the highways on their land, stating that essential workers are being delayed in their travel. Many people living on the reservation don’t have running water in their trailer or houses that are mostly occupied by multiple families. They cannot afford a virus outbreak.

At what point do we remove our mandatory facial masks to reveal the voluntary facial masks underneath? They are the masks that prevent us from seeing the true reality of what it means to be compassionate to all human beings. The Indigenous people in America need help, they should be protected just as we are, and cherished. They are the original people of this land. Our government should not even hesitate. We don't have to complain about our pity circumstances . The fact is, we can take off our mask anytime we are willing to see and act on what is morally correct. It doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. https://www.facebook.com/CNNRe...
