Today's riddle: What is clean when it is black and dirty when it is white? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Frosh share their Stanford highlights (so far) (stanforddaily.com) — New Stanford frosh share what's already making campus feel like home, from late-night "mickleball" and Wilbur Dining's pho bar to SLE discussions and biking to Town & Country. Their reflections highlight how fast friendships, routines, and a sense of community are forming just weeks into life in Stanford.
2. California scientist wins a Nobel Prize, then makes school lunches for his kids (whec.com) — Stanford resident and professor Karl Deisseroth learned in the middle of the night at his Stanford home that he'd won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work in optogenetics. Even as reporters and university staff converged on his faculty housing neighborhood, he paused the celebration to make school lunches for his kids before their school day.
3. The Other Europe Through the Archives (stanford.edu) — Stanford is hosting a workshop conversation where historian Norman Naimark and campus curators will explore how archives shape our understanding of Central and Eastern Europe. Drawing on Stanford's rich Slavic and Eurasian collections, they'll discuss migration, shifting borders, and historical memory, while highlighting how these materials open new questions for students and scholars on campus.
4. Research Roundup: Nobel Prize for neuroscience (stanforddaily.com) — A Stanford professor, Karl Deisseroth, has just won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for pioneering optogenetics, a brain-research technique developed at Stanford. Local researchers also unveiled a promising urine test for bladder cancer and a study showing gas-powered commercial kitchens, including those in California, can expose workers to unhealthy air and extreme heat.
